Mason Jar Cover Review

I was looking for more projects to crochet for Christmas and came across mason jar covers. They looked simple enough so I searched out a few that looked pleasing to the eye but also easy to do and settled on this particular one:

Here is my end result:

So far I've crocheted two of these, one in red and one in green. I haven't decided yet if I want to put little candies inside or just have the battery operated tea lights. I used 3 of the battery operated tea lights for the photo because one didn't seem to be bright enough.

My jars are quart sized so I used the pattern on the page for that and there is a pattern also for pint sized jars. I read in the comments that the larger size pattern will also fit Yankee Candle jars but I haven't confirmed that.

I know my crochet stitching is looser than what most people do, so I went down two sizes for the hook from an H to an F and that was to help get the correct gauge of the initial ring so that it would be 3". I used a cheap yarn from WalMart that's a basic acrylic 4 ply with the brand called Big Twist and the color Deep Red. I probably could have gotten away with using a size G crochet hook to make it look lacier but I didn't want it to be too loose on the jar.

Following other patterns I read first, I chose to test my project at certain times by placing the jar inside to see how it fit and to make sure that it didn't get too tall before doing the last four single crochet rows. It was fun watching the project grow in completion and now the hard part is figuring out who will get some of these at Christmas.

Rating: A+
Pattern ease: A+
Did it turn out like the photo from the website? Yes, although I used a different yarn so it wasn't as open with the stitches as the sample from the instruction page.
What did I like about the pattern? I liked that it was an easy pattern and looked elegant enough to give away as a Christmas gift. It worked up quickly with no questions on how to work the pattern.
Would I recommend it to others? Yes, I think that even beginners can handle this project with success.
Cost of pattern: Free
Cost to make project: The yarn cost about $2 on sale and I already had the crochet hook.

Oh wow! How cute! I love this! Gosh, if I knew how to do this all of my jars would be covered. What an awesome (and frugal) gift idea!

They look wonderful. The way the light shines though these is wonderful. I would use candles every time.

You did an excellent job on these. I would love to see a multicolored one. Maybe for Easter, you could make some with Easter colors to see how it turns out. If you decide to do this, please let me know the end result. Keep up the great work.

Are you still making these? I like them a lot! One thing about mason jars is that they are ubiquitous with many uses that don't just involve canning.
One could make different colors for each of the major holidays. For Halloween, orange & black would be good with the battery operated tea lights & put in some windows for an eerie glow.
I think fake flowers would look pretty in here. Not real ones as you'd have to change the water often.

I stopped making them because I ran out of people to gift them to :D Plus, I get tired of making the same crafts over and over again. I like to move onto the next thing.

Have you ever had a booth to sell items at? Then you'd get new customers. Or a shop on i.e. Etsy. A way to make items that you enjoy doing the most & earning a bit of extra profit. I don't know how this would work out, but why not do a raffle or something on Crafter Craze, a Facebook group, or other forums & the winner(s) get one of the craft items as a prize. Can do more steps & have the name, year, & what group it was from as a memento.
Or not lol

I've never done a booth because I never wanted to keep a bunch of stuff here at the house. Storing a ton of crafts that might not sell is kind of tricky.

I volunteered when I sold my lotion balms & lipglosses. Some people had more space than others so just packed it in & stored it there. It depends also on how big the items are.
