Folding a Palm into a Cross

It's Palm Sunday and I like to take my long palm that I received at church and fold it into a cross. I still have last year's cross hanging by the doorway and now I have another to join it. Here are two instruction videos that will help you through the steps:

What kind of plant do you use for the Palm? I've heard of palm trees & have seen some plants that are like a palm tree. Is there one that would be best suited to crafts such as this?

I'm really not sure what species that we get for Palm Sunday. I remember that the Catholic church where my husband attended used a different type of palm than my church did and it was more like a real leaf than a stalk.
