I wanted to make a set of coasters to give to a family member for Christmas and these were so whimsical I had to give it a try! Here are the pics of my finished results:
Do they look more like bagels? Would they be better with "colored frosting"?
I used yarn that I had leftover from past projects and I used a skein of White Sugar N Cream for frosting and part of the holder, a skein of Sahara Splash by Premier Home for the doughnuts and holder and pieces from a skein of Psychedelic Sugar N Cream to do the sprinkles.
I started off as the pattern stated with the frosting and found it was easy if you could keep track of the count...which I failed to do a few times. ooops. I finally finished the frosting and then moved on to the next step which I'm happy that the pattern had a picture to show how to add the doughnut part and work it into the white stitches. It wasn't difficult.
Once finished though I discovered that my gauge was too loose and my doughnut was just too big and I needed to start over. Once again I had counting problems but that was me, not the pattern. The hardest part was adding the sprinkles since I didn't want them to show through the back sides so I had to try to work the yarn through the stitches carefully to get the sprinkles all around the frosting. My fingers are still hurting from all that tedious work.
Rating:
Pattern ease: A
Did it turn out like the photo from the website? Somewhat. I still worry they look more like bagels.
What did I like about the pattern? It was whimsical and unique. I don't think the recipient will ever get anything else like it this year.
Would I recommend it to others? Yes! This isn't too difficult of a pattern since there are a couple of photos on the pattern to help guide you through it. The holder was a little more confusing and I would give the holder a C since I struggled with it and it was more open at the top than I thought it should be.
Cost of pattern: Free
Cost to make project: I paid nothing since I had the materials on hand but it would probably cost about $6-10 depending on where you buy your yarn.
