Cast Iron Handle Cover crochet

These look odd but they're great for covering cast iron skillets. I had to change the hook size to F for mine and I did 25 rows instead of 29 from the pattern.
 
I've never had a cast iron pan; just intimidated with it lol What is the benefit of having a cover handle? Would this be safe enough in lieu of a potholder?

Exactly! It keeps the handle cool enough to pick up the pan without having to have a bulky potholder. What I found with the one I crocheted for myself was that there were too many small holes in the pattern, and that meant that my hand still felt the heat. I think I would need to rework the pattern with a smaller hook to make the pattern tighter.

Thank you! I had wondered about those. I've seen potholders that were not as tightly knit together sold as potholders but we never bought them as they didn't seem to do a good job with not keeping hands free from being burned.
