I have seen a lot of folks making their own detergent powder and cloth washing powder at home. I never honestly tried it myself but always wondered if it is a good practice to make at home or just buy it from the market. On youtube I came across a lot of homesteaders who have tried to make the washing powder on their own.

Have you tried making such type of the powder at home?
 
My friend who used to live on a sailboat would make her own laundry detergent because it was cheaper that way! I can't remember what she used though but she also scrubbed the clothes by hand.
 
Yes making our own is cheaper if the items are locally available. I think homemade process also reduces the usage of the chemicals that factories add for the fancy product release.
 
This is an interesting idea, and it's one I haven't come across yet. Making our own products from ingredients is for sure cheaper than buying a branded washing powder, but it's something I am yet to try. Thank you for sharing; I will give it a go by following the tutorial.
 
I haven't tried washing powder but do make my own laundry cleaner. Half baking soda, half borax. Essential oils. Liquid castile soap.
 
I'll be honest, I didn't even know that you could make your own laundry powder lol. Not something that has ever crossed my mind that I thought I may need to do but that's quite tempting, especially if it's cheaper like Alexander has mentioned. I can't count how many times i have to go to the store and spend an obscene amount of money on detergent - I'm going to have a look into this and see if I can bulk create and save some cash at the same time.

Zandra - is there a specific method you use to create your cleaner? I'd be interested if you could share it, always down to try new things!
 
@marteebee I like simplicity. Then you're more apt to continue with it. I just mix the baking soda & borax together & use 1/2 cup in the wash. More if needed. Add in about 3 pipettes half filled of EO in the water. Be sure you do it while it's filling up before you add in clothes otherwise your clothes will get the EO greasy stain. I add in about 1/2 cup liquid castile. Sometimes I just forgo the castile & I find that works great. The EO I get in bulk as it's cheaper. Any other questions, feel free to ask :)
 
You can avoid borax too. A lot of folks have allergy of the borax and so it is better to avoid using it for those who don't want it. I also think the essential oils and the other should be used with keeping allergies in mind.

That's interesting. Never thought of making our own. Maybe once my husband and I live in a house vs an apartment and can mess with our own washer and dryer.
 
I have tried making washing powder and in my experience, it is not cheap. It might be cheaper than a well-established brand but homemade washing powder does not clean well.
