Velvet Pumpkins

This video has an easy way to make pumpkin decorations using velvet, and that makes for a sophisticated decor. It's filled with rice, so don't get them wet! It also uses dried out pumpkin stems, and I'm not sure what else can be substituted if you don't have those. Anyone have any other ideas?

These would be a great gift for someone who is a bit more on the ritzy side & would appreciate it. I wonder if you can fill them with something other than rice. Maybe crumpled paper?
As for the stems, I have seen fake ones online before. The real ones have a better effect, but how long would they last though?

I bet paper would work for filling as long as it's acid free so it doesn't degrade the fabric over time. It could also be filled with more fabric.
