Here are the instructions for my original creation (based on some ideas I've seen using rope and fabric) of this snowman gift bag. The bottom part is crochet and the top is flannel fabric sewed.

Materials:
- White 4 ply medium weight yarn 2 skeins

- 18”x13” flannel fabric
- Black buttons (5/16” to 3/8”)
- Orange rick rack for nose or orange yarn to create a nose

Abbreviations:
SC = Single Crochet

Instructions:

Make a magic ring, chain 1 and make 10 SC
Round 2: 2 SC in each stitch around, join, CH 1 (20 sc)
Round 3: SC in each stitch, join, CH 1 (20 SC)
Round 4: 2 SC in first stitch, SC in next stitch, repeat to end, join, CH 1 (30 SC)
Round 5: SC in each stitch around, join, CH 1 (30 SC)
Round 6: 2 SC in first stitch, SC in next 2 stitches, repeat to end, join, CH 1 (40 SC)
Rounds 7 – 15: SC each row, join, CH 1 (40 SC)
Bind off. Weave in ends.

On the front, sew on the buttons and nose. Set aside.
Cut fabric to 18”x13”.
Step 1: Lay the fabric so that it is wide (horizontal). Measure for 2 small button holes (approx 3/8” long) on the RIGHT SIDE of fabric in the middle across and approx 5 ½” from the bottom. I made the button holes using the zig zag stitches on my sewing machine. Carefully slit open holes. Flip fabric over so it’s still horizontal.
Step 2: With WRONG side up, fold the top down ½” and sew seam.
Step 3: Fold RIGHT SIDES together so that short sides meet and sew a seam ¼”.
Step 4: Fold down the fabric from the top 3 ½”. Watch to see where the buttonholes are so they don’t get sewed over. Sew near the bottom edge of the folded down fabric as well as 1” above that seam (buttonholes should be somewhat centered).
Step 5: Turn fabric to right side out. Fold the bottom edge to the wrong side and pin around the crocheted snowman making sure the buttonholes are exactly centered over the face. If the fabric is too large, gather evenly on each side to make it fit and sew around.
Step 6: Use a safety pin and hook it onto the ribbon then insert into one of the button holes and pull through to the other side. Unhook pin and pull ribbon to close the bag, then tie into a knot. Can use a lighter to carefully melt the edges of the ribbon or use Fray Check.

I like the completed size then people can determine what they'd like to use it for & adjust their gifts accordingly. If it's for a party, be nice if names were on it to help differentiate who the gift bags would be for. Either sewing it on which would be quite tedious or just a marker.

I didn't think about the name tags!! I know that the stick on ones don't really stick onto fabric very well. I'll have to ponder this before December!
